Your legal requirements in Trinidad
What the law actually requires where you are — summarized from our jurisdiction guides. Open any topic for the full details.
Trinidad and Tobago's Occupational Safety and Health Act, 2004 (s. 27, "First-aid appliances") requires a readily accessible, properly stocked first-aid box, and where more than 150 persons are employed a person trained in first-aid treatment (CPR and basic emergency care) must be in charge of it and available during working hours.
Trinidad and Tobago's Standards for Regulating Early Childhood Services (standard 7.3.2) require all childcare staff to be trained and qualified in first aid by a recognised provider (St John Ambulance, the Red Cross or an equivalent agency), with at least one trained first-aider on site whenever children are present and a fully equipped first-aid box (7.3.1).
Trinidad and Tobago has no dedicated Good Samaritan statute; as a common-law jurisdiction, a rescuer who acts in good faith is judged against the reasonable-person standard and is liable only for negligence.
Nurses in Trinidad and Tobago are regulated by the Nursing Council under the Nursing Personnel Act, Ch. 29:53, earning continuing-professional-education credits for approved courses while hospital employers commonly require Basic Life Support; no officially confirmed mandatory hour threshold for licence renewal was found.
In Trinidad and Tobago, care staff in residential and home-care settings for seniors and vulnerable adults are commonly required to hold current first-aid and CPR training; institutional staff qualify through the Ministry of Education Nursing Assistant Training Programme (Enrolled Nursing Assistant) under the Nursing Personnel Act Ch. 29:53, and a standalone recognized certificate is also accepted.
Foster care in Trinidad and Tobago is managed by the Children's Authority under the Children's Community Residences, Foster Care and Nurseries Act, with applicants completing a medical examination, police certificate of character, home assessment, psychological assessments and training; a recognized, current first-aid and CPR certificate is widely expected as part of caregiver readiness.
Online CPR and first aid training is recognized in Trinidad and Tobago — the Act does not prescribe a delivery mode, and workplace first-aid training combining online theory with a practical skills assessment is accepted.
