In Trinidad and Tobago, nurses accumulate continuing-professional-education credits for certain courses and hospital employers commonly expect Basic Life Support, while for care roles emergency skills are built into the qualifying pathway. Here is what the rules and workplaces expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

Health professionals: continuing education and up-to-date skills

Nurses in Trinidad and Tobago are regulated by the Nursing Council of Trinidad and Tobago under the Nursing Personnel Act, Ch. 29:53. Continuing professional education credits circulate for approved nursing courses, and hospital employers commonly require Basic Life Support as a condition of the post, so keeping clinical and emergency skills current is a practical expectation of the role.

The professional duty to maintain competence and to be able to act in an emergency underpins this ongoing training. No officially confirmed mandatory hour threshold for licence renewal was found; a recognized, in-date credential is the practical way to evidence that emergency skills meet the standard employers and the Council expect.

Continuing-professional-education credits are awarded for certain courses in Trinidad and Tobago, but no officially confirmed mandatory hour requirement for licence renewal was found; keeping skills current is expected and largely employer-driven. A CPR/BLS course taken through an accredited or recognized provider can count toward those credits, subject to the Council's criteria.

The requirement is met by any recognized continuing-education activity on an eligible topic. CPR/AED, ACLS (advanced cardiovascular life support) and PALS are among the eligible activities; other topics also qualify (for example safe prescribing, suicide prevention or violence prevention). A single course therefore both meets the obligation and counts toward your hours — provided you keep the proof.

  • the relevance and quality of the content;
  • the training framework;
  • the quality of the material provided;

For support staff, the qualifying pathway leads through the Ministry of Education Nursing Assistant Training Programme, a two-year route to enrolment as an Enrolled Nursing Assistant with the Nursing Council. For home-care and employer-based roles, a valid recognized standalone CPR and first-aid certificate is required and accepted alongside that occupational training — obtained and then renewed, kept current and verifiable.
