Becoming a foster family in Trinidad and Tobago means giving a child a safe, temporary home through the Children's Authority. Applicants undergo a medical examination, background and psychological checks, a home assessment and training before approval. Holding a current first-aid and CPR certificate is widely expected as part of being ready to care for a child.

Foster care in Trinidad and Tobago is managed by the Children's Authority under the Children's Community Residences, Foster Care and Nurseries Act; applicants complete a medical examination, police certificate of character, in-depth interviews, a home assessment, psychological assessments and training before the Board grants approval. While that training centres on basic childcare and protection, a recognized first-aid and CPR certificate is commonly expected so a carer can respond to common emergencies — injuries, choking, an unresponsive child — including CPR for children and infants.
Where required, the certificate is recognized by the Children's Authority and kept current through periodic renewal. It is one part of caregiver readiness that is in addition to — never a substitute for — the assessment, background checks and the demonstrated ability to care for a child before placement on the Register of approved Foster Care providers.
